Valmalenco, in the Retic Alps, covers an area of 300 Km2 and is the largest among the side valleys of Valtellina in the district of Sondrio.
It's crossed by the river Mallero with many tributaries like Lanterna and Torreggio.
It's surrounded by three important mountains ranges: the Mount Disgrazia to the west, the Pizzo Bernina to the north and the Pizzo Scalino to the East.
There are large areas covered by meadows and pastures which in the past gave importance to animals breeding, activity which later on lost of importance because of the changes from agricultural activities to other more profitable ones.
Instead it is still strong the impact of mineral activities on the economy of the Valley, above all the quarrying and treatment of marbles, serpentine, slate, talc and potstone well known in the whole world.
But it is tourism which has influence above all the development of this splendid Valley in the Central Alps, due to modern facilities and well equipped winter sport centers.
At the start of this development there is the practice of alpinism , above all since 1862 when a group of English climbers reached for the fist time the summit of Mount Disgrazia, always considered by the inhabitant as the place to be avoided.
Today Valmalenco, in its different villages, can provide 35 hotels with 1500 bed accommodation, many apartments for holiday and about 20 huts at the starting points for excursions or at the foot of the most important mountain tops.
There are ideal places to stay in order to avoid the stress of a routine life, bases for climbing and for excursions along the well kept paths for viewing of animals.
